Cumberland, Md. — Allegany College of Maryland earned a split with Garrett College on Friday, winning a tight opener before falling in the nightcap at home.
Game 1: Allegany College of Maryland 4, Garrett College 3
Allegany College of Maryland opened the doubleheader with a 4–3 victory over Garrett College, holding off a late rally to secure the win.
The Trojans struck first in the bottom of the first inning when Frank Diaz drew a bases-loaded walk to bring home the game's opening run. Garrett responded with a solo home run in the second to even the score, but ACM reclaimed control in the fourth behind a clutch swing from Duke Psoras, who blasted a three-run home run to center field to give the Trojans a 4–1 lead.
Garrett closed the gap in the fifth with a two-run homer, but that would be as close as it got.
Ivan Sypa earned the win on the mound, allowing five hits and three runs over seven innings while striking out five. Garrett's starter took the loss after surrendering four runs over three and one-third innings.
Psoras led the Trojans offensively with three RBIs, while Manny Cartagena went 3-for-4 to pace ACM in hits. The Trojans showed discipline at the plate, drawing seven walks and turning a key double play defensively.
Game 2: Garrett College 8, Allegany College of Maryland 1
Garrett College used a six-run seventh inning to pull away for an 8–1 win in the second game of the doubleheader.
ACM struck first in the second inning when Jesus Rodriguez launched a solo home run to left field. Garrett tied the game in the fifth before taking the lead in the sixth and breaking things open in the seventh, capitalizing on two hits and multiple walks.
Christopher Fagot delivered a strong start for Allegany, pitching six innings while allowing just two runs (one earned) and striking out seven. Garrett's starter also impressed, holding the Trojans to one run through nearly seven innings.
Rodriguez drove in the lone run for ACM, while Rodriguez and Arturo Garcia-Tunon each collected a hit.
