The Allegany College of Maryland volleyball team showcased its resilience and competitiveness Saturday, splitting a pair of dramatic five-set matches during the Chesapeake Tri-Match. The Trojans opened the day with a narrow loss to Frederick Community College before bouncing back with a hard-earned victory over Chesapeake College.
Frederick 3, ACM 2
(19-25, 25-19, 23-25, 27-25, 15-13)
The opening match delivered everything expected from a Region 20 showdown, as neither team could create much separation throughout five closely contested sets.
ACM jumped out to an early advantage by claiming the first set 25-19 before Frederick answered with a 25-19 win of its own in the second. The Trojans regained momentum with a 25-23 victory in the third set, but the Cougars survived a back-and-forth fourth set, 27-25, to force a deciding fifth. Frederick eventually edged ACM 15-13 in the final set.
The Trojans finished with 44 assists, 18 service aces, and 80 digs while hitting .175 as a team.
Adyson Weyandt led the ACM offense with
21 kills while also collecting
21 digs for a double-double.
Chloe DeBlock added
16 kills and 16 digs, while
Summer Giffin posted a well-rounded performance with
10 kills, 10 digs, and seven service aces.
Sophomore setter
Allison Angelo contributed
14 assists, 14 digs, and five aces, while
Jaiden Fradiska added four aces from the service line.
Frederick was paced by
Adyson Popoff, who finished with
20 kills, while
Talia DoCarmo added
15 kills and hit .350. The Cougars also received 15 digs from DoCarmo and 11 kills from
Samiyah Hubbard in the victory.
ACM 3, Chesapeake 2
(25-23, 20-25, 25-21, 23-25, 15-12)
Facing a second consecutive five-set match, the Trojans responded with determination and grit to close out the day with a victory over Chesapeake College.
ACM took the opening set 25-23 before Chesapeake evened the match in set two. The Trojans reclaimed the lead with a 25-21 third-set win, but the Skipjacks answered with a 25-23 fourth-set victory to send the match to another winner-take-all fifth set.
This time, ACM delivered the finishing touch, using strong serving and defense to secure a 15-12 victory.
The Trojans recorded
27 service aces, 80 digs, and 34 assists in the win.
Chloe DeBlock again led the attack with
16 kills while adding
five aces.
Adyson Weyandt registered another double-double with
10 kills and 20 digs, while
Summer Giffin contributed
10 kills, 10 digs, and eight aces.
Allison Angelo finished with
12 assists and 12 digs, and
Addison Franz added 10 digs for ACM.
Chesapeake was led by
Macyn Miller, who recorded
24 kills, while
Aubrey Taylor anchored the defense with
25 digs.
Iyona Brown contributed 12 kills, and
Kaylee Sockriter added 10 kills in the loss.

Despite playing 10 grueling sets in a single day, several Trojans turned in standout performances across both matches.

The Trojans demonstrated remarkable toughness throughout the day, responding to a heartbreaking loss against Frederick by rallying for an impressive five-set victory over Chesapeake to earn a split against two Region 20 opponents.

The Trojans finished the weekend 1-1 after splitting a pair of five-set contests and will return home Wednesday evening for a key Region 20 matchup against Potomac State. The Catamounts have long been one of the region's premier programs, providing ACM with another opportunity to test itself against top competition early in the season.
