Resilient Trojans Continue Upward Climb, Highlight Growth in 2026 Season
The Allegany College of Maryland softball team closed out its 2026 campaign with an overall record of 9–22–1 (4–16 in conference play), a season defined not by the final record, but by growth, perseverance, and a program continuing to build toward long-term success.
After beginning a multi-year rebuild just a few seasons ago, the Trojans took another meaningful step forward this spring, ultimately eclipsing one of their key benchmarks—competing their way into consideration for the NJCAA Region 20 Tournament. Despite a challenging schedule filled with strong conference opponents, ACM showed steady improvement, resilience, and a belief in the direction of the program.
Offensive Growth and Competitive Edge
Offensively, the Trojans showed significant development as the season progressed, finishing with a strong .319 team batting average and 252 total hits across 32 games. The lineup demonstrated depth and balance, with multiple players stepping into key roles throughout the year.
Sophomore
Natalie Melby led the charge, batting .389 with a team-high 35 hits, 34 runs scored, and a .544 slugging percentage. Her standout season not only anchored the lineup but also earned her

Breean Gay added versatility and production, hitting .351 while contributing across multiple statistical categories, including extra-base hits and pitching appearances.
Jaynie Simpkins provided consistency with a .320 average and a team-leading 21 RBIs, while
Kayla Hill and
Morgan Weimer rounded out the core with reliable middle-of-the-order production.
The Trojans showcased their offensive potential in several breakout performances, including a 27-run outing against Christendom College and a sweep of Chesapeake College, where timely hitting and aggressive baserunning were on full display.
Pitching Anchored by Experience
In the circle, the Trojans leaned on a primarily sophomore-led pitching staff to navigate a demanding Region 20 slate.
Breean Gay led the staff with 74.2 innings pitched and five wins, while
Kayla Hill logged 68.2 innings and a team-high 58 strikeouts. Both pitchers took on significant workloads against some of the top offensive teams in the region, gaining valuable experience that will continue to shape the program moving forward.
While the numbers reflected the challenges of facing high-powered lineups, the staff showed resilience and determination, consistently competing deep into games and giving the Trojans opportunities to stay in contests.
Key Moments and Season Highlights
Throughout the season, ACM demonstrated flashes of its growing identity. The Trojans earned impressive wins over Christendom College, Chesapeake College, and Monroe University, while also securing a late-season conference split against Anne Arundel and a
Sophomore Day celebration.Â
Close contests—including a one-run loss to Penn State DuBois and a tied game against Penn State Fayette—highlighted the team's ability to compete and battle until the final out.
The team closed the season on a
two-game winning streak, reinforcing the continued progress and momentum heading into the offseason.
A Sophomore Class That Helped Lead the Way
A defining characteristic of the 2026 season was the leadership and impact of its sophomore class. These student-athletes formed the foundation of the program, contributing both statistically and culturally.
Among the sophomores who helped guide the Trojans this season were:
"Our sophomores really laid the groundwork for where this program is heading - we are so proud we got to work with these athletes for 2 years," said Coach Rick Twigg.
Their leadership extended beyond performance, helping to build a culture centered on accountability, growth, and resilience.
Success Beyond the Field
The Trojans' impact extended well beyond competition, as the team remained active in the community throughout the year. ACM softball participated in
breast cancer awareness fundraising efforts, including walks and awareness initiatives, and continued its tradition of hosting a
youth winter clinic, connecting with the next generation of student-athletes.

In the classroom, the program continued to excel, with
four softball student-athletes graduating this semester, including standout
Natalie Melby. Melby also earned

in the running for the highest team GPA at ACM, further underscoring its commitment to academic success.
Continuing to Build the Pipeline
As the program continues to grow, the foundation remains strong. ACM will return
eight players next season, bringing valuable experience back into the lineup and circle.
The future is equally promising, with
nine incoming freshmen already signed, reflecting the program's continued recruiting momentum and upward trajectory.
Looking Ahead
While the 2026 season marked another step in the rebuilding process, it also reinforced the direction of ACM softball. From increased offensive production to competing for postseason positioning, the Trojans continue to make meaningful strides.
With a strong returning core, an influx of new talent, and a culture built on resilience and development, ACM softball is well-positioned to continue its rise within Region 20.
The Trojans leave the season not only with growth and experience, but with a clear identity—and a future that continues to gain momentum.
