The Allegany College of Maryland Athletics family joins the basketball community in remembering former Trojan standout Michael Horton, one of the most gifted point guards to ever wear red and white.
Horton arrived at Allegany after a remarkable high school career at T.C. Williams High School in Alexandria, Virginia. A three-year starter, he earned recognition as a Street & Smith All-American, Virginia All-State First Team selection, and Washington Post All-Metro Second Team honoree. He graduated as T.C. Williams' all-time leading scorer with 1,753 career points after averaging 32 points, nine assists, and nine rebounds per game as a senior.
At Allegany during the 1996-97 season, Horton became the engine of one of the most explosive offenses in school history. The Trojans averaged a school-record 102.4 points per game, and Horton's leadership and court vision were instrumental in that success. He finished the season with:
• 365 assists (10.1 per game)
• 424 points (11.8 per game)
• 60.1% shooting from two-point range
Although he was overlooked for All-Region XX honors, Horton delivered when it mattered most, earning Region XX Tournament MVP honors after posting 15 points and 15 assists in a championship victory over Hagerstown Community College. He also scored 21 points in Allegany's first NJCAA National Tournament game and recorded a season-high 20 assists against CCAC South Campus.
Legendary ACM head coach Bob Kirk once said of Horton:
"Michael Horton has the potential to be better than any point guard we've ever had."
His success at Allegany opened the door to the University of Cincinnati, where he played under Hall of Fame coach Bob Huggins. As a member of the nationally ranked Bearcats from 1997-99, Horton appeared in 57 games, averaged 4.8 points and 4.1 assists per game, and earned a spot on the 1998 Conference USA All-Tournament Team.
Beyond his collegiate playing career, Horton continued to make an impact in his hometown. He was inducted into the Alexandria City Public Schools Athletic Hall of Fame, cementing his legacy as one of the area's most accomplished basketball players.
Michael Horton leaves behind a legacy of excellence, leadership, and dedication to the game. His contributions to Allegany College of Maryland Basketball will not be forgotten, and we are proud to celebrate the lasting impact he made on our program and the many lives he touched throughout his journey.
