CUMBERLAND, Md. — The Allegany College of Maryland Lady Trojans softball team put together a pair of strong all-around performances Tuesday afternoon, sweeping the Monroe Express in a home doubleheader with wins of
14–6 and
7–4 at Lady Trojans Softball Field.
Game 1 – Offense Erupts in 14–6 Victory
Allegany came out firing in the opener, scoring early and often to set the tone for the day.
The Lady Trojans struck first in the bottom of the first inning when
Breean Gay drove in the game's opening run with a single, followed by an RBI double from
Jaynie Simpkins. Allegany widened the gap in the second inning with aggressive baserunning and timely contact, highlighted by
Lanie Iski's steal of home and an RBI double from
Kayla Hill.
After Monroe rallied with a five-run fifth inning to briefly cut into the lead, Allegany answered emphatically. The Lady Trojans responded with
five runs in the bottom of the fifth, capped by a
three-run single from Iski, to put the game away.
Gay earned the win in the circle, allowing just one run on three hits over four innings while striking out six.
Hill provided solid relief to close out the contest.
Iski led the offense with
three RBIs, while
Natalie Melby,
Iski, and
Hill each recorded two hits. Allegany showed discipline at the plate with
nine walks and used speed to their advantage, finishing with
five stolen bases, including two from Melby.
Game 2 – Pitching and Patience Secure the Sweep
The nightcap featured another balanced effort as the Lady Trojans overcame an early deficit to earn a 7–4 victory.
Monroe scored first in the opening inning, but Allegany answered immediately when
Hill delivered an RBI single to tie the game. The Lady Trojans took the lead in the second inning on a bases-loaded walk drawn by
Melby, then added insurance runs in the third on a sacrifice fly from
Iski and an RBI groundout by
Alyssa Medina.
After Monroe briefly pulled within one with a solo home run, Allegany maintained control down the stretch behind strong pitching.
Gay went the distance in the circle, allowing two earned runs while striking out
eight over seven innings. At the plate,
Hill led the way with
two RBIs, while Allegany once again demonstrated patience, drawing
eight walks as a team.
