Box Score Allegany College of Maryland Athletics Announces Exciting Home Opener for Men's and Women's Soccer Teams
Cumberland, MD – August 27, 2024 – Allegany College of Maryland (ACM) Athletics proudly hosted a thrilling doubleheader for the 2024 home opener of the Men's and Women's Soccer teams against the undefeated Montgomery College Raptors.
Women's Soccer: A Historic Return
The Lady Trojans made a historic return to varsity soccer after nearly 20 years, under the leadership of Coach Pratt. The team showcased remarkable energy and determination in their debut match. Allie Scritchfield scored an unassisted goal in the first half, giving the Lady Trojans a 1-0 lead at halftime. Despite a valiant effort, the Montgomery Raptors fought back in the second half with goals from Jeily Garmendez (assisted by Natalie Zambrano), Kendra Wotchuin (twice), and Emilia Webb in the final seconds, resulting in a 4-1 victory for the Raptors.
Asst. Coach Glass praised the Lady Trojans for their resilience and hard work, stating, "The ladies played extremely hard for the entire game. Facing a competitive team like Montgomery Rockville first of the season and finding our footing on the field, we stuck with a very competitive Raptor team for nearly 70 minutes. Ultimately, a thinner roster made the difference this time around." Coach Pratt also expressed pride in the team's performance, highlighting
Hailee Jenkins' crucial saves and Lexi Simpson's strong defensive play.
The Lady Trojans will continue their season with an away game at Hagerstown on Thursday at 3:00 PM.
Men's Soccer: A Competitive Clash
With the women's game running over, the Trojans on the men's side took the field later. This was not only their first game of the season but also the first time they played on their own home turf, including practices. The Raptors, already 1-0 heading into the match, quickly took the offense. Within the first two minutes, Yoshuke Ono scored, followed by two more goals from the Raptors. Reel Kamba scored unassisted for ACM, making the halftime score 4-1 in favor of Montgomery.
Both teams fought hard, but the game was called early with about 18 minutes left due to darkness. In the final moments, Jonathan Khoun assisted Jordan Sidney for a goal, ending the game with a 6-1 victory for Montgomery. Montgomery Rockville moves to 2-0, while the Trojans, now 0-1, are eager to face Hagerstown on Thursday at 5:00 PM for their first road match of the season.
Coach Pratt commended the team, saying, "With all the elements facing kind of against us; later start, pretty intense heat, new to the field with its recent renovations - we really did not show that any of these things even were a factor. I was happy to see many of our guys have good games. Jace Patton had a really good game as well as Caedon Wallace - but truly many of our guys were showing that true skill prevails and it was noticeable for sure."
The evening ended and it was so nice to see so many supporters of both teams and we are truly so happy to have soccer back.
