CUMBERLAND, Md. – May 7, 2025 – Allegany College of Maryland (ACM) is proud to announce that two of our outstanding student-athletes, Josie Shuke and Moise "Moses" Tefy, will be delivering commencement speeches at our graduation ceremonies on Saturday, May 17. This spring, 357 students are expected to earn 409 degrees and certificates, with ceremonies held in the Physical Education Building's gymnasium.
Josie Shuke: A dental hygiene student from Everett, Josie has excelled both academically and athletically. Holding a 3.9 GPA, she has been an ACM ambassador and a key player on the women's basketball team during the 2022-23 and 2023-24 seasons. Josie's journey began at Bedford High School, where she took early college classes through ACM. Her dedication to both her studies and athletics exemplifies the balance that student-athletes can achieve. Assistant Coach Courtney Eagan for the women's basketball team remarked, "I would like to say I am surprised about this recognition for Josie, but if you met her and know her, then this would be an honor that you kind of knew was coming for her. She is totally deserving—no questions asked. Special thanks to her Dental Hygiene instructors for guiding her."
Moses Tefy: Hailing from Geneva, Switzerland, Moses is a business management student who has also made his mark on the men's basketball team. With a 3.765 GPA, Moses has demonstrated that academic excellence and athletic commitment can go hand in hand. He played on the men's basketball team during the 2023-24 season and was part of the recent team that made it to the NJCAA Division I tournament in Kansas. Athletic Director and Men's Basketball Coach Tommie Reams stated, "Moses exemplifies what it means to be an Allegany College of Maryland Trojan. His work ethic, dedication, and preparedness all set him apart from the ordinary student. Our programs are built on the fundamental principle that being elite people is our primary goal. I am proud to say that Moses represents all of our programs and our college in a light that we can all be proud of."
Josie and Moses will be speaking at the morning and afternoon ceremonies, respectively, showcasing that student-athletes can excel in academics, athletics, and leadership roles. Their achievements are a testament to the supportive environment at ACM that fosters success in multiple arenas.
ACM Athletics' mission is to develop high-quality student-athletes, employees, and community by engaging in high-quality, dynamic learning experiences. This mission is reflected in the accomplishments of Josie and Moses, who have thrived both in the classroom and on the court.
