Trojans Rally Past Potomac State, Battle Niagara in Season-Opening Tournament

Elijah Hall’s 30-point debut powers ACM to a comeback win before a hard-fought showdown with No. 16 Niagara at the Diehl’s Ford Classic

Allegany College of Maryland tipped off its 2025-26 season in thrilling fashion at the Diehl's Ford Classic inside Bob Kirk Arena. Day one featured a border rivalry showdown against WVU Potomac State College, and the Trojans found themselves in an early hole—trailing by as many as 19 points in the first half. But the second half told a different story. At the 14-minute mark, freshman guard Elijah Hall ignited a comeback with a personal 10-point run that slashed the deficit and swung momentum in ACM's favor. From that point on, the Trojans never looked back, storming to a 92-82 victory. Hall led all scorers with 30 points, adding four assists, three rebounds, and a steal. Jaylen Brown chipped in 19 points, while Darrien Ponder added 14. Off the bench, Dorell Little Jr. contributed 12 points, and Christian Brown posted a double-double with 11 points and 12 rebounds.

Day two brought a nationally ranked challenge as ACM faced No. 16 SUNY Niagara. The Trojans struggled to find rhythm early, going scoreless until the second half, but clawed back late behind Hall's relentless effort. With 4:26 remaining, ACM trailed 75-72, setting up a tense finish. Coach Reams leaned on a closing lineup of Hall, Jaylen Brown, Christian Brown, Ponder, and Alex Byrd as both teams entered the double bonus. A late foul on Ponder and a technical call shifted momentum, allowing Niagara to stretch the lead at the line. Despite the setback, ACM fought to the final buzzer—Hall's steal and bucket, Little's clutch three, and Jaylen Brown's deep shot in the closing seconds kept hope alive. Ultimately, Niagara's Marshall proved unstoppable with 41 points, sealing an 89-83 win for the Thunderwolves.

The Trojans leave the opening weekend at 1-1, proving they can compete with top-tier programs. Hall's breakout performance and the team's resilience in high-pressure moments signal promise for the season ahead. ACM now turns its attention to a tough road test at Monroe University next weekend, aiming to build on lessons learned and tighten execution in late-game situations.

Special thanks to Diehl's Ford Sales, the Premier Sponsor of the tournament, for supporting an exciting weekend of NJCAA basketball at Allegany College of Maryland.
